Devon and Cornwall Police Authority is looking to appoint three independent members (one of whom must be a lay justice) to serve on the Authority from 1 October 2008.
The members will help to secure an efficient and effective police force in Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly. This includes consulting the public about the work of the police and building a partnership between the police and local communities.
Members attend meetings, participate in public consultation on local policing issues, and keep themselves informed of national and local policing issues.
Devon and Cornwall Police Authority is looking to attract as diverse a range of people as possible irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, religious belief, sexual orientation or disability.
Desirable skills for the positions include good communication skills, knowledge of race and community relations, and an ability to represent a broad range of local communities.
Authority Vice Chairman Mike Bull said: "This is a fascinating role but also needs a significant time and energy commitment. As with everything in life, what you will get out of the role is a direct reflection of how much you put in. Police Authority membership is about seeking ever improving policing.”
Bob Jones, chairman of the Association of Police Authorities, said: “Being a Police Authority member is challenging and demanding but it provides a real chance to shape local policing in your area.”
Applications must be handed in by 12 June. People interested in applying should contact the Devon and Cornwall Police Authority via:
